Muonionalusta Meteorite 1980g
Nearly all meteorites from this location have been naturally smoothed over time due to glacial activity, which has worn away their regmaglypts and other surface features. However, on rare occasions, specimens are discovered that still retain some original characteristics, and in exceptionally rare instances, the internal crystalline structure is exposed.
For over 22 years, my colleagues have been meticulously metal detecting this site in northern Sweden, yet they have only uncovered a handful of meteorites displaying any exposed internal structure—typically just partial sections. This specimen is a remarkable exception, with its entire crystalline structure fully revealed. The fine, interwoven crystal lattice, known as the Widmanstätten pattern, is a hallmark of iron meteorites that cooled slowly over millions of years in space. This intricate, geometric structure is not only scientifically significant but also highly prized for jewelry making, as it creates a striking, natural metallic pattern unlike anything found on Earth.
