LG Fossil Triceratops Jaw Hell Creek MT
Triceratops jaw from the Hell Creek Formation
The Triceratops, a well-known genus of herbivorous dinosaurs, roamed North America during the late Cretaceous period, approximately 68 to 66 million years ago. Recognizable by its three distinct facial horns and large bony frill at the back of its head, the Triceratops could reach up to 9 meters in length and weigh as much as 12 tons. This dinosaur’s robust build and powerful limbs suggest it was well adapted to grazing on low-lying vegetation. The Triceratops’ distinctive features likely served both defensive purposes against predators like the Tyrannosaurus rex and as display structures for social interactions within its species. Fossil remains of the Triceratops are among the most frequently discovered, providing extensive insights into its anatomy and behavior.
