Genuine Prehistoric Fossil Tooth — Angustidens 2.25", Summerville SC

This is a genuine fossilized Carcharocles angustidens tooth, measuring 2.25", recovered near Summerville, South Carolina, one of the best known localities in the world for this species. A display stand is included, as shown in photos.

Angustidens lived during the Oligocene, around 28 to 23 million years ago, and is considered an ancestor in the lineage that led to megalodon. The creeks and rivers around Summerville cut through Oligocene layers such as the Chandler Bridge and Ashley Formations, laid down when warm, shallow seas covered the South Carolina Lowcountry. Moving water keeps eroding those deposits today, and collectors recover teeth like this one from creek beds and river bottoms.

Angustidens teeth are easy to tell apart from megalodon because of the side cusplets, small pointed teeth on each side of the main blade. Megalodon lost those cusplets over time. This tooth survives as a fossil because it was dense and enamel-coated, while the shark's cartilage skeleton broke down soon after death. Its light enamel with soft tan shading comes from the minerals in the sediment where it was buried, which gives it a clean, warm look on display.
