Genuine Prehistoric Fossil Tooth — Meg 2.60", Peace River FL

This genuine fossilized megalodon tooth measures 2.60" and was recovered from the Peace River in Central Florida, one of the most popular fossil hunting rivers in the United States. Rich chocolate brown tones run across the enamel and well defined serrations line both edges of the blade. Minor peeling on the enamel by the tip, barely noticeable.

The Peace River flows south from Polk County through Hardee and DeSoto Counties to Charlotte Harbor. Along the way it cuts through phosphate-rich layers of the Peace River Formation and the Bone Valley region, left by warm, shallow seas that covered Florida during the Miocene and Pliocene. Megalodon and the whales it hunted lived in those waters. When the river runs low in the dry season, collectors wade in with shovels and sifting screens and pull teeth like this one from the gravel beds.

This tooth survives as a fossil because it was dense and enamel coated, unlike megalodon's cartilage skeleton, which broke down quickly after death. Peace River teeth are known for their rich colors, mostly black, gray, and brown, sometimes with tan or bluish tones, which come from the phosphate and minerals in the river sediment.
