Miami’s Monkey Jungle fossil site sits within the park in southern Miami-Dade, where natural limestone “solution” sinkholes preserved a Late Pleistocene fauna. Excavations in the 1990s led by archaeologist Robert S. Carr uncovered 10,000+-year-old bones and teeth—including American lion, dire wolf, Pleistocene horse, and camel—making it one of Florida’s notable Ice Age localities (late Rancholabrean, ~20,000–15,000 years ago).
