The Diplodocus, a quintessential dinosaur from the Late Jurassic period, is among the most famous and well-studied sauropods ever discovered. This colossal herbivore roamed the Earth around 154 to 152 million years ago and is particularly well-represented in the Morrison Formation of Wyoming.
Physical Characteristics: Diplodocus is renowned for its extraordinary size and distinctive physical features. It possessed an extremely long tail, which was used for balance and possibly for defense, and an equally elongated neck, which it likely used to reach high vegetation or to feed on soft plants at ground level. Diplodocus could grow up to about 90 feet in length, making it one of the longest land animals ever known. Its relatively slender build for a sauropod, with four sturdy legs and a small head at the end of its long neck, set it apart from its contemporaries.
