Amazing Agatized Coral Enhydro

An enhydro is when water becomes trapped inside a portion of the coral when it is being replaced with the minerals that 'fossilize' it. This particular specimen underwent a pretty aggressive attack by the boring clam, Lithophaga. Although the coral specimen is not very large, it has 14 borings throughout. Two of the bore holes filled with sediment that subsequently mineralized as well, creating molds. One of those molds is hollow and incredibly, retained some of the surrounding water when it mineralized millions of years ago! Many of the bore holes are now the outward projections inside the geode. Their translucence can be seen in the dark photo. This is the first of this type of enhydro I have seen. Beyond rare!
